The Spark

On July 1, 1776, Delaware delegate Caesar Rodney received an urgent message: the Continental Congress in Philadelphia was deadlocked on the vote for independence. One of Delaware’s delegates was in favor; one was opposed. Rodney’s vote was the tiebreaker, but he was eighty miles away in Dover, suffering from severe illness. Without hesitation, Rodney mounted his horse and rode through a torrential summer thunderstorm, cover of night, and grueling heat, arriving in Philadelphia just in time to cast Delaware’s decisive vote for liberty. It was a ride of pure, unadulterated duty—a single man risking his life to ensure his colony stood first in the line of freedom.

The Modern Legacy

Today, Delaware celebrates this legacy of being “The First State” through the Revolutionary Rewards Trail. Using a custom mobile application, families and history enthusiasts can travel across the state, checking in at historic stone taverns, colonial courthouses, and scenic riverfronts to unlock exclusive local rewards. The trail culminates in the massive “Celebrate 250 on the Riverfront” festival in Wilmington on July 4, 2026, starting at 3 p.m. and ending with a spectacular fireworks display over the Delaware River.
